The University of Pikeville is a private university and a leading higher education institution located in Central Appalachia. 80% of the student population are Kentucky residents, 72% are Appalachian in origin. Nearly 40% are first-generation college students, and a little over half transfer 50 credit hours into the institution. UPike embraces first-generation students as a strength and sets an aggressive goal to improve student retention rates first-to-second year retention by 20 points within ten years. In the first two years, overall retention improvement of nearly seven percentage points resulted in over $1M in returning tuition with no additional student acquisition costs.
UPike selected Nuro Retention’s integrated platform to combine its existing non-cognitive student success indicators with its learning management system (LMS) and student information systems (SIS). Doing so aggregated disparate data and accurately categorized 80% of its at-risk student population. The holistic view resulted in an early alert system that allowed intervention while there is still time to change an individual student’s outcome.

The Nuro team does a great job of collaborating with their clients. Feedback is used constructively and allows for impactful changes to occur within the program to best suit the institution. Their willingness to actively listen to their clients needs makes for more of a partnership relationship opposed to a client/provider relationship.

As with any implementation, there were some learning curves and glitches. I have found the Nuro team to be professional and responsive to our needs. They listen to our needs and work to fine-tune the implementation to meet our goals.
